Solar Kits and the Advantages of DoItYourself Solar System for Your House

Solar Kits and the Advantages of DoItYourself Solar System for Your House

If you’re handy with tools and the idea of spending time on the roof doesn’t scare you, you can save thousands by installing your own solar kits system to create a solar powered home.

Your best bet is a large area of south-facing roof space where the solar panels can be installed to receive six to eight hours of direct sunlight a day. The tall, leafy trees you depend on to provide summer shade and buffer wind and rain can’t be in the way. No sun = no power.

An array of how-to manuals and e-books are available and should be your first purchase. Do some Web surfing, you can find a good guide for under or at least in that price range. If you want to generate enough solar electricity to power an entire home, the practical choice is to make sure as many large appliances as possible run on gas. Those can include the water heater, stove, and clothes dryer, three big energy drains that can require more power than your solar power home system can produce. Why not consider solar kits and do it yourself.

Taking those appliances out of the equation, the average size home will require more than 300 square feet of solar panels, at a cost of about ,000.

The solar panels are going to be the costliest part of the project, but the more you buy, the cheaper they are. While some people even go so far as building their own panels, purchasing a kit that includes panels and all the components you need for a solar power home will save you time and effort.

The kit will include a digital charge controller and watt converter, mounting brackets for the solar panels, a voltage tester, and wiring. Typically, the extras will cost another ,000, so the price tag on a total do-it-yourself solar power home will be about ,000. Having a professional installer will more than double the cost, but keep in mind the federal government is offering a 30 percent tax credit for whatever you spend through 2016, and you’re more likely to get your credit if your system is installed by a licensed contractor. The same goes for incentives being offered by many states. And certainly, you don’t want your town’s building inspector knocking at your door, so take all these things into consideration before heading up the ladder.

Most solar power homes are integrated into the area power grid, which means you don’t have to store the power your system generates. Your local power company will install a net meter that allows you to sell your excess energy (during that vacation trip) and draw on the reserve sometime in the future. Go to dsireusa.org to see if you are in one of the 41 states that offer net metering. While you’re there, check out the solar kits local incentives offered to create a solar power home.

You can get a solar powered home pretty easily or just do it yourself with solar kits. Neil Baulch has been involved in solar energy for many years. Checkout the photos of his solar dish and learn more at Solar Kits

DIY Solar Panel System Cost

www.solardave.com SolarDave: Please tell me about your solar panel system and how you saved some money? Adam Stevenson: The total of the system and materials was K. I ended up spending about another 00 in permit fees and a structural engineer and 0 for an electrician, several hundred dollars for a guy to come help me out for the two afternoons he spent with me. Xcel (Energy) gave me 538 rebate. Fix cost based on the number of kilowatts you are installing and has nothing to do with how much you pay the permit office or the electrician. My final cost after rebate was 37. (SolarDave note: that is cheap!) I started my research in solar probably about a year before I actually installed it went and got a couple of bids from some of the local solar people both from contractors that my friends have used as well as just searching the internet and while talking to one of the guys I find of developed a good feeling from him, and I asked the question “Would it be possible to do some of the work myself” and kind of learn along the way he said “Sure I absolutely support the do-it-yourself-er (DIY) so I said why don’t you throw me bids, what it would cost just come home and have solar one day and what it would cost to have it done where I do some or all the work myself. And throw them both to me and I said let’s try the second one. The guys name is Steve Cross from Sun Spot Solar. I gave him my electric bills and said this is how much I think I need to generate and he

10 Watt Solar Charger

Here’s a 10 watt photovoltaic charger with a 12 Ah battery. You can do quite a bit with this baby. It’s based on a Popular Science DIY article from July of 2008. Let me know what you think. Jocelyn Cohen. Here are the specs: 10-watt photovoltaic (PV, aka solar-electric) panel: Voltage: max. power 17.6V, open circuit 21.6V Current: max. power 0.57A, short circuit 0.61A. Pop Sci used a 5-watt panel, probably to keep costs down, but if Im bothering to build it, I want to get more out of it! The charge controller can handle an even bigger panel, too. battery: 12 amp-hours 4 amp charge controller: I love this elegant little thing. Here is the spec sheet from the manufacturer: www.vellemanusa.com The charge controller keeps the battery from overcharging or discharging too deeply, both of which can ruin the battery. meter: The Pop Sci article used a 10A meter, which doesnt do much when the panel is only rated at around .6 amps! If about .7 is all youre going to get at peak power, then the 1 amp meter will do the trick. In the video youll see that I used a cheap multimeter to measure current for now, but Im going to add an analog panel meter like this one between the panel and the controller. Im also going to add a meter or two between the battery and the load to put numbers on what this baby can actually do. I got connectors at Radio Shack.

6 Volt Battery Solar Charger Results

www.survivalistboards.com The results from the solar charge were disappointing, After being in the sunlight for about 6 – 7 hours, the battery only had about a 30 minute charge. The charger that was used in the video is an American Hunter, model number BL-R680-S. I’am going to have to find a solar charger that puts out enough juice to charge a 6 volt battery with about 7 – 8 hours of light. www.survivalistboards.com www.survivalistboards.com
