As we spend a fair amount of time boondocking (camping without hook-ups), solar panels have given us the freedom to enjoy the peace & quiet of remote locations without running our generator too much. Since we already installed our panels on the RV (7 years ago), this is just an overview of our set-up, as opposed to a detailed tutorial. We show the general layout and components of the system, including the panels themselves, the wiring and the solar controller. We also talk about the benefits of including a simple and inexpensive tilt kit, which allows tilting the solar panels up in the winter, when the sun is lower on the horizon. Our first RV had two panels, which were permanently fastened flat to the roof, so they couldn’t be tilted. We’ve learned a lot since then, and the new panels are tilt-able, and also use thicker 6-gauge wire to reduce loss along its length. Be sure to confirm that all methods and materials used are compatible with your particular recreational vehicle. Every type of motorhome, motorcoach, fifth wheel, travel trailer, bus conversion, camper and toy hauler is different, so your systems may not be the same as ours. The Enecsys micro inverter, installed at the back of each solar module, offers a unique and excellent value proposition compared to conventional string or central inverters. Benefits include significantly increased energy harvest and lower lifetime cost of solar photovoltaic systems, increased inverter reliability to match the life of solar modules, comprehensive web-based monitoring and a communications system that analyzes and reports the performance of each solar module within the PV array to enable system performance optimization, simplification of PV array design, ease of installation, and improved safety. CertainTeed Roofing EnerGen – Solar Power Roofing – Glenbrook U CertainTeed Powers New Generation of Roofing Products with EnerGen Photovoltaic Solar Roofing System (Valley Forge, Pa.) — CertainTeed Corporation is powering a new generation of green, sustainable energy solutions with the introduction of the EnerGenTM Photovoltaic Solar Power Roofing System at the 2010 International Roofing Expo in New Orleans. Unlike other photovoltaic (PV) systems on the market, EnerGen is specifically designed with building professionals and conventional roofing contractors in mind offering ease of installation and vastly improved aesthetics for homeowners. The EnerGen system features integrated UNI-SOLAR® thin-film laminates, the world leader in flexible solar modules, that seamlessly integrate with traditional asphalt roofing shingles. The system’s lightweight design requires no rooftop penetrations, making it easier for contractors to install while maintaining roof deck integrity. The laminates lie flush with the remainder of the traditional roofing shingles, providing a streamlined, visually appealing appearance. By providing a more aesthetically pleasing, unobtrusive roof plane with no roof penetrations, the product overcomes the largest objection to the acceptance of solar panels. “Photovoltaics continue to gain momentum as the world’s fastest growing energy technology,” says Guillaume Texier, president of CertainTeed Roofing. “Through the development of EnerGen, a lightweight …

Here’s a few of the major steps along the solar installation path. This was a text book job of two arrays on different pitches. The inverter is feed from two strings of 11 modules. We hope you find the video informational as well as entertaining. Blue Skies, That Solar Guy – Jeff
This is my 110 watt solar array with two harbor freight solar kits and two 10 watt panels. The wires go to a 250 watt sun grod tied invertor I got off of eaby but the thing is not effect worth a crap 110 watt`s go in and only 60.5 watt`s come out in the driect sun. But at the curent electric price I am still making .50 a month so I can deel with the crappy invertor.
